Detailed Insights

During the grand Yoga Mahotsav 2026, staged at the historic Western Group of Temples in Khajuraho, Union Minister of State for Ayush Shri Prataprao Jadhav announced that Kolkata will host the principal celebrations of International Day of Yoga (IDY) 2026. The decision underscores Kolkata’s blend of cultural richness and spiritual legacy, positioning the city as an apt backdrop for a globally‑watched wellness event.

The Ministry of Ayush introduced the year’s theme, “Yoga for Healthy Ageing”, aimed at encouraging older adults to sustain physical strength, mental serenity, and proactive health habits through regular yoga practice. The narrative stresses mobility, flexibility, emotional equilibrium, and disease‑prevention as pillars of ageing gracefully.

At the Khajuraho Mahotsav, participants performed the Common Yoga Protocol (CYP), a standardized sequence devised by Ayush that incorporates simple asanas, pranayama, meditation, and relaxation techniques suitable for all ages and fitness levels. The mass demonstration highlighted yoga’s widening appeal across demographic groups.

In parallel, the ministry unveiled two online initiatives: the Yoga Sangam Portal, enabling nationwide registration for yoga programmes, and the Yoga Park Portal, designed to map and promote dedicated yoga spaces across India. A newly crafted yoga‑themed T‑shirt also debuted to heighten public awareness.

Minister Jadhav further projected Khajuraho’s potential to emerge as an international yoga‑and‑wellness destination, citing its spiritual ambience, ancient architecture, cultural depth, and tranquil environment as compelling assets for future tourism.
