Detailed Insights
Established in 1987, the Srikrishna Museum in Kurukshetra has grown from a single gallery to nine galleries spread across three buildings. Despite its cultural richness, daily footfall has remained modest at around 1,000 visitors, prompting the need for a revitalisation strategy.
The proposed fourth block forms part of a comprehensive master plan to renew the museum experience. It follows the existing architectural vocabulary while adding three thematic galleries: Mahabharata Times (presenting historically significant sites from the epic), 48‑Kos Kurukshetra (emphasising pilgrimage spots and regional artefacts), and Krishna Bhakti Movement (showcasing how devotion to Krishna has permeated art, music, and culture).
Besides the galleries, the expansion will feature replicas of Krishna‑Vishnu temples from across India, an outdoor entertainment zone inspired by key Mahabharata events, and interactive exhibits that leverage modern technology to engage younger generations. Museum curator Balwan Singh stresses that these new elements will convey authentic cultural narratives and enhance educational value.
The drawing committee has finalised the architectural plan, which will be presented to the Chief Architect’s Office in Haryana. A consultant will subsequently prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for administrative approval by the Haryana Government and financial support from the Union Ministry of Culture. The project aligns with Haryana’s broader objectives of preserving heritage, promoting religious tourism, and ensuring inclusive cultural experiences.
