Detailed Insights

The Konark Sun Temple, located in Odisha’s coastal district of Puri, stands about 35 kilometres from the town of Puri and 65 kilometres from Bhubaneswar. Constructed circa 1250 CE, this edifice was consecrated to Surya, the Hindu Sun God, who embodies light, vitality and time.

Beyond its religious function, the temple historically served as a crucible for learning, where scholars explored astronomy, mathematics and the arts. Stone carvings adorn every surface, depicting deities, celestial beings, dancers and mythic scenes, showcasing the mastery of Kalinga artisans.

The architectural layout mimics a colossal stone chariot drawn by seven steeds, each wheel rising roughly 12 feet. The wheels symbolise the twenty‑four hours of a day, while the horses represent the days of the week. Ingeniously, the temple’s inclined stone surface casts a shadow that moves with the sun, permitting observers to read time – the ancient Sundial of Konark.

Today, the temple remains an emblem of spiritual devotion and scientific ingenuity, attracting pilgrims during the Chandrabhaga Mela and tourists seeking to witness its grandeur.
