Detailed Insights
The CEIR (Central Equipment Identity Register) portal is a government‑backed solution that allows users to file a report by providing the device’s IMEI number. Once entered, the system locks the handset across every mobile network in India, preventing unauthorized use.
Law‑enforcement agencies then interrogate the database, track the phone’s location, and secure the device. After verifying that the claimant is the legitimate owner, officials lift the block and facilitate the return of the handset.
Launched on 12 September 2022 as a pilot across Karnataka, Maharashtra, Delhi and several northeastern states, the portal was extended to Telangana in April 2023. Since then, the state has reclaimed a national record of over a hundred thousand phones.
Within Telangana, the Hyderabad commissionerate leads with the highest count of recoveries. Other districts that have shown remarkable performances include Warangal, Kamareddy, Suryapet, Rajanna Sircilla and Jogulamba Gadwal.
Public awareness initiatives stress the importance of promptly reporting lost phones through official channels to curb cybercrime and safeguard personal data.
