Key Highlights

  • India’s inaugural e‑waste eco‑park will be set up in Holambi Kalan, North Delhi.
  • It will span 11.4 acres and handle up to 51,000 tonnes of e‑waste every year.
  • The project will generate more than ₹350 crore in revenue and create over 1,000 green jobs.
  • Implementation follows the DBFOT model under a public–private partnership framework.
  • It aims to professionalise the informal recycling sector and promote a true circular economy.

Detailed Insights

The eco‑park is part of a national strategy featuring four similar sites across India. It will be built through a Design, Build, Finance, Operate, and Transfer (DBFOT) structure, ensuring a partnership between government and leading environmental technology firms worldwide.

Designed to process every category listed in the E‑Waste Management Rules, 2022, the facility will manage a diverse array of discarded electronics—from old computers and mobile phones to industrial instrumentation. Its waste‑to‑resource programme will minimise landfill consumption and unlock the value of recovered metals and plastics.

Beyond recycling, the park includes dedicated dismantling and refurbishing zones, a second‑hand electronics market, specialised training centres, and rehabilitation facilities for informal workers. The goal is to shift the sector from a hazardous informal practice to a structured, formal economy offering safer working conditions and equal opportunities.

Key Concepts

  • Electronic waste (e‑waste) – Any discarded electrical or electronic equipment that poses environmental risks if not managed properly.
  • Circular economy – A systemic approach that keeps resources in use for as long as possible, reducing waste and emissions.
  • DBFOT (Design, Build, Finance, Operate, Transfer) – A turnkey model where a private partner delivers a project and hands it over after a fixed period.
  • Green jobs – Employment opportunities that contribute to environmental sustainability and healthier communities.
  • Public‑Private Partnership (PPP) – Collaboration between the government and private entities to fund, build, and operate infrastructure projects.
