Key Highlights

  • West Africa supplies about 60 % of the world’s annual cocoa output.
  • Côte d’Ivoire is the largest producer, delivering roughly 2.2 million tonnes each year.
  • Ghana follows as the second largest, exporting cocoa as a major export after gold.
  • Indonesia and Nigeria add substantial volumes outside Africa, diversifying the market.
  • Millions of smallholder farmers rely on cocoa farming, yet the sector faces child labour and price risk issues.

Detailed Insights

The global cocoa harvest is estimated between 5 and 6 million tonnes annually, most of which is sourced from the tropical regions of West Africa.

Côte d’Ivoire alone produces about 2.2 million tonnes per year, representing nearly one‑third of total world output. The country’s cocoa market is dominated by small family farms, with over five million people dependent on the crop. Despite its productivity, Côte d’Ivoire struggles with labour ethics and price volatility.

Ghana supplies around 1.1 million tonnes yearly and ranks second worldwide. Cocoa is a backbone of Ghana’s economy, second only to gold in export value, and its beans are prized for high quality and consistent flavor profiles used in premium confectionery.

Indonesia, the largest cocoa producer outside Africa, supplies roughly 700,000 tonnes annually, largely from the islands of Sulawesi and Sumatra. It exports both raw beans and semi‑processed cocoa products, contributing to global supply chains.

Nigeria produces about 300,000 tonnes each year. With government investment in improved farming techniques and processing infrastructure, the country is shifting from mere bean exports to value‑added cocoa products, boosting farmer incomes.

Ecuador leads South America with around 300,000 tonnes of fine‑flavour beans. Its specialty cocoa is sought after by luxury chocolate makers worldwide.

The cocoa sector also confronts pressing challenges, including child labour, unequal income distribution, and market price fluctuations that affect farmers’ livelihoods.
