Key Highlights

  • Akash Prime was successfully fired from an altitude of over 15,000 feet in Ladakh.
  • The test showcased the missile’s capability to strike fast‑moving aerial targets in thin air.
  • Enhanced seeker and phased‑array radar allow simultaneous multi‑target tracking.
  • Akash Prime’s deployment marks a new phase in India’s self‑reliant air‑defence strategy.

Detailed Insights

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) unveiled Akash Prime as a refined version of the original Akash surface‑to‑air missile system. Designed for medium‑range engagement, it is now equipped with a precision seeker and high‑altitude capability, making it suitable for challenging terrains such as Ladakh’s rugged environment.

During the high‑altitude trials, the Army Air Defence Corps, collaborating closely with DRDO scientists, demonstrated direct strikes on agile targets in an environment with reduced atmospheric density. This operational validation boosts confidence for air defence along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) and Line of Control (LoC), where aerial threats are increasingly dynamic.

Earlier in Operation Sindoor, the system helped neutralise over 50 drones and repelled coordinated drone and aircraft attacks, proving its combat readiness in real‑time situations.

Key technical features include an upgraded seeker for all‑weather accuracy, phased‑array radar for simultaneous target engagement, autonomous and group deployment modes, and 360‑degree coverage, ensuring protection of critical installations and mobile formations.

These advancements dovetail with India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, paving the way for additional Akash regiments that will consolidate a layered, resilient air‑defence framework across the nation.

Key Concepts

  • Akash Prime – The modernized surface‑to‑air missile system with precision seeker and high‑altitude operability.
  • DRDO – Defence Research and Development Organisation, the agency responsible for research in Indian defence technology.
  • Atmanirbhar Bharat – The national policy calling for self‑reliance in defence production.
  • LAC & LoC – Line of Actual Control and Line of Control, contested borders where air threats are monitored.
